When planning your move, it’s important to estimate the full cost of your relocation.  It’s much easier to estimate the full expense of your move if you know the exact distance that you must travel from your old home to your new one, how many items you’re bringing, and the full cost of moving supplies. Here are some pointers for estimating your total moving costs:

Moving Distance

Do you know how far your new home is from your current one? Believe it or not, knowing the distance between your homes is incredibly important. Local movers typically charge by the hour, so the more distance the movers must travel, the higher the cost. While long distance movers charge by the weight of the shipment, distance is also a factor of the total moving cost because of the expense of gas and vehicle depreciation. Find the distance between your old and new homes by searching on Google or Apple Maps.

How Much You’re Moving

How many boxes and the amount of furniture you’re moving is a crucial factor when determining how much your move will cost. It’s even more important to know if you’re moving to another city or state since long distance moving companies take the weight of your belongings into account to determine your moving costs. If you’re looking to lower your expenses, you should try to limit the number of moving boxes you have by purging what you don’t need.

Additional Fees

Movers may add additional fees for several reasons. For example, they’ll likely tack on additional charges if you have noticeably bulky items that require extra labor. Expect to have additional fees if there is an extra distance for movers to travel, they must park far from the entrance to your building, or if an elevator is out of service.

Moving Supplies

Don’t forget to account for moving supplies like boxes, tape, bubble wrap, labels, and pens. Though they may not cost a lot individually, these supplies can add up rather quickly, so keep track of the costs.

Miscellaneous Costs

In addition to calculating the costs of hiring a moving company, you should also account for miscellaneous costs. Think about how much your travel, lodging accommodations, food, and other expenses will total for you and your family. Don’t leave any expense out of your calculations. The more detailed your estimate is, the better prepared you can be.

By thinking through all of these factors, you can determine an accurate estimate of your moving costs. Most moving companies have their own formulas for calculating costs, so your estimate may be different than theirs, but you can begin to plan accordingly and start your move on the right foot. To get a better idea of how much your move will cost, we’re happy to provide you with a free moving quote.
